It may surprise you to learn that kitchen surfaces are typically dirtier than your home's bathroom.  Germs common in household kitchens include salmonella, staphylococcus, e-coli and listeria. The sink faucet handles, cleaning sponges, and can openers are among the dirtiest items in your kitchen.

Here are seven tips to help you kill bacteria lurking in your kitchen:
1. Disinfect kitchen sponges by microwaving them for 60 seconds
2. Wash countertops frequently with a mixture of 1 quart water and 1 teaspoon bleach to kill germs
3. Sanitize your kitchen sink drain with dishwashing soap and hot water
4. Clean your garbage disposals by grinding lemons and ice cubes
5. Wash the lids of canned foods before opening, so you don't contaminate the food inside the can or your can opener
6. Wash your can opener after every use -- it's fine to put it in the dishwasher
7. Wash fruits and vegetables before placing your refridgerator
